“Aircraft engines of the future”, lecture by Sébastien Candel – Professor Emeritus at CentraleSupélec and member, former president of the Académie des Sciences

As part of LEMTA’s 50th anniversary celebrations, we are delighted to welcome Sébastien Candel, who will be giving a talk for the general public entitled:

“Current research in the field of aeronautical propulsion and prospects for electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft”.

During this talk, Sébastien Candel will share his knowledge and experience by highlighting the challenges facing engineers and researchers in the field of aeronautical propulsion.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a major challenge that requires the transition to low-carbon energies. Aviation, which is responsible for 3% of global emissions, is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050. Two main options are emerging: continuous improvement of propulsion and structures to reduce fuel consumption, and the adoption of sustainable fuels from renewable sources. Revolutionary concepts that make a complete break with what already exists, such as electric and/or hydrogen-powered aircraft, are also being explored.
This presentation examines current propulsion research, analyses disruptive projects and clarifies the criteria for integrating new aircraft into air fleets.

Organised in partnership with “Cycle Sciences et Société”, this conference will be held :

Sébastien Candel is a specialist in aeronautical and space engineering. He obtained his engineering degree from the École Centrale Paris in 1968 and continued his doctoral studies at the California Institute of Technology (Calteh), where he was awarded a doctorate in 1972. After a year’s military service in the Armoured Forces in Orléans, he became an engineer at the Office National d’Études et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) and obtained his doctorate from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Sorbonne University) in 1977. A senior lecturer at the University of Compiègne, he returned to École Centrale Paris as a professor in 1978, taking responsibility for aeronautical and space studies and teaching fluid mechanics. A senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France and Professor Emeritus at CentraleSupélec – Université Paris-Saclay, he continues his research activities at the EM2C laboratory of the CNRS.

Among his many awards, Sébastien Candel has received the CNRS Silver Medal, the Grand Prix Marcel Dassault from the Académie des Sciences, the Pendray aerospace literature award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and the Zeldovich Silver Medal and Gold Medal from the Combustion Institute.

He currently chairs EDF’s Scientific Council and the Haut Comité de la Mécanique.

A Fellow of the AIAA and the Combustion Institute, he is a member and former president of the French Academy of Sciences, a founding member of the French Academy of Technologies, a member of the French Academy of Air and Space, and a foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
